New Sun (Fast as Hell)
“ Individual and collective memories fuse together. Rolling down the avenues, like urban arteries full of movement.
Short breaths on concrete.
Ancient stories and contemporary fragments become this city’s internal organs. Collected thoughts and rush, as sweating skin that embraces the landscape. Trying to breathe, while rolling down to a new sun.”
Anestis Ioannou
Engraved marble fragments, mounted on skate trucks and wheels, become objects of movement, both physically and conceptually. A fusion of fragments simultaneously linked to antiquity and contemporary urban culture, carrying the weight of history while navigating the fluid, unpredictable terrain of contemporary urban life. They exist between permanence and transience, between the solidity of stone and the fleeting traces of motion. The city becomes a site of belonging and displacement, where bodies in motion negotiate visibility and erasure.
Skateboarding is an act of resistance, a reclaiming of space, a refusal to remain static. The engravings on these marble fragments carry voices, personalized traces of movement, memory, and displacement. Each mark is an imprint, a testament to presence, transforming stone into a vessel of lived experience. Movement becomes a temporary state of exile, an ongoing negotiation of space, identity, and the meanings we leave behind. Who controls mobility? Who moves freely? Who is pushed to the margins? And what traces do the exiled leave behind? In this fusion of past and present, history does not stand still; it rolls forward, carrying its echoes through time and stone.
New Sun is an ongoing series of works, since 2019.
